GIS & Smart Cities
The Centre of Excellence on GIS & SMART CITIES was established in collaboration with the Knowledge Partner Tata Consultancy Services, IoT-DE division and the Department of Civil Engineering, RMKEC on 23.5.23. This Centre’s primary objective is to create training programs and workshops that enhance the skills and knowledge of students in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology.40% of the Civil Engineering curriculum is framed as per the suggestions of the knowledge partner and an exclusive honors degree is provided in Geoinformatics comprising of lab-integrated subjects like Remote sensing and GIS, Drone surveying, Geospatial Applications in Civil Engineering, Urban planning and smart cities, GIS in utilities and telecom, GIS application development and customization and a Capstone Project. Students are trained at regular intervals by the Subject Matter Experts in the GIS domain of TCS through virtual and physical modes. A GIS laboratory with advanced software like ESRI ArcGIS 10.8.2, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Urban Suite- City Engine, and Quantum GIS are available to the students to carry out their projects.
The pilot batch of training was conducted in the virtual mode from 17.4.23 to 21.4.23 to the 2019-23 batch. The second batch of hands-on training in ESRI ArcGIS technology was conducted between 9.10.23 to 13.10.23. Students undertake projects like Smart Dustbin waste management using GIS, Drone-based property tax mapping, Land use Landcover mapping, Site Suitability analysis, etc using the facilities in the GIS lab. This program successfully imparted knowledge to a selected group of twenty students from the 2020-2024 batch, who were chosen through a domain-specific campus recruitment process of TCS IoT-DE. During the training, the students are exposed to the functionalities of ArcGIS software, the creation of map layouts, use cases of GIS and the customization of GIS software.
