The IEEE Photonics Society R.M.K. Engineering Chapter is a student-run organization at RMK Engineering College. We are a local chapter of the global IEEE Photonics Society, dedicated to promoting education and innovation in the fields of optics, photonics, and their applications. We aim to connect students with the latest advancements in technology and provide them with a platform to develop their professional and technical skills.
Mission
Our mission is to inspire and educate the next generation of engineers by fostering an environment of learning, collaboration, and exploration in photonics. We strive to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world application by organizing engaging events, workshops, and lectures that showcase the transformative power of light-based technologies.

Events
An international workshop titled “The Power of Photonics and ML in Microplastics Detection and Wearables” was held at R.M.K. Engineering College on February 13-14, 2025. Hosted by the IEEE Photonics Society Student Chapter, the event aimed to explore the integration of photonics and machine learning for environmental sustainability and healthcare. The workshop featured guest lectures on topics such as microplastic detection using optical scattering and wearable sensor technology. Participants also engaged in hands-on sessions to build optical transmitters and receivers, gaining practical experience in communication systems. The event concluded with a certificate distribution and group photo, celebrating the successful sharing of knowledge and the inauguration of the new chapter.
